Excerpt From “Maggie’s Misery”

An excerpt from Maggie’s Misery tentatively set for release November 1, 2013!

Maggie walked across the street and into a cafe where Christian was sitting, waiting for her. He looked up and saw that she had finally arrived. He felt like the last hour had lasted forever. He got up and rushed to her. He grabbed her and hugged her tightly. He never wanted to let her go. He was afraid he had lost her once and had promised himself on the flight to Morocco that if he found her, he was never letting her go again. Maggie hugged him back just as tightly. For the first time in over a week, she felt safe and at peace. After what seemed like an eternity, Maggie let Christian go and backed away from him slowly.

“I was beginning to wonder if I was going to have to charge into the hospital and go all Rambo to get you out of there” Christian said with a slight laugh. Maggie smiled at him as she took a seat in the chair opposite him.

“I had to steal these scrubs out of a supply closet because I was sure that I would have been stopped at the door if I tried to leave in my hospital gown” she said with her own laugh. Maggie thought for a second about how good it felt to laugh. It was one of the little things that she’d taken for granted. Laughing, crying, smiling, walking, running, they were all things that she could do that she took for granted. She had plenty of time to do a lot of thinking in the past two days and had sworn to herself that she’d stop taking even the smallest things for granted.

“I thought you might need these,” Christian said as he produced a bag. “I hope they fit. If they don’t we’ll go get you some that do” he said as he passed her the bag. Maggie looked in the bag and then at Christian. He had bought her a pair of jeans, T Shirt and sandals.

“I don’t know how to thank you Christian,” she said. “ You’ve saved me, literally. I don’t know what I could ever do to repay you” she finished with the tears welling up again.

“You can start by calling me Chris” he began. “That’s what those closest to me call me and I don’t know anyone closer to me anymore than you” he said. Maggie almost thought she saw a hint of sadness or remorse cross his face. She smiled at him.

“My pleasure Chris” She said smiling at him. Her smile brought on his smile again.

“Next, you can go into the ladies room and change out of those ridiculous hospital scrubs” he said with the smile broadening on his gorgeous lips. Maggie’s heart melted as she picked up the bag, got up from the table, leaned over and kissed Chris on the cheek before heading to the ladies room. Christian sat there for the next few minutes drinking his coffee while he waited for Maggie to return from the ladies room. When she returned, he couldn’t conceal his approval

“You know you’re beautiful right?” He asked her.

“You know that I know you’re full of shit right?” she said mockingly as she sat back down.

“Maggie, you are more than beautiful. You are strong, smart, kind, honest and resourceful. That on top of your outer beauty makes you exquisite” he told her. “I have never met anyone as beautiful as you and I have met every super model in the world. They are all ugly compared to you” he finished taking another sip of his coffee. At that moment, the coffee he had ordered for Maggie arrived.

“Thank God!” Maggie exclaimed as she was feeling extremely uncomfortable with the topic of the conversation. “Chris,” she started and then decided she’d just accept the compliment. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me” She said smiling at him with her eyes cast downwards.

“See that, that right there is one of the sexiest things about you” Christian exclaimed. “You don’t know how beautiful you are” he continued. “You are so humble that it drives men wild. Just because they use that to hurt you isn’t your fault Maggie. The vulnerability in you is an aphrodisiac” he said sipping his coffee, not taking his eyes off of her. He was so fucking gorgeous. Maggie wondered how a man like that could think a woman like her was beautiful. She heard the words; she just didn’t understand their meaning.

“Again, thank you for the compliment’s Chris but can we move on to what the fuck we’re going to do about the mess I’ve gotten us into?” she said sipping her own cup of steaming hot liquid.

“Certainly Ollie” Christian said with a chuckle. They finished their coffee, Christian left a tip on the table for the waitress and they stepped out the door of the cafe. Christian looked at Maggie and she smiled at him. She really was beautiful.

He loved her big blue eyes, red hair and flawless skin. He loved her sarcastic sense of humor, her contagious laugh and sexy voice. He loved her brain, the way she thought and the way she could handle anything. He only wished she could see what he saw. It was as he stood there looking at her that he heard the first of two gun shots. He didn’t think much of it until the look on Maggie’s face changed. She stopped smiling. She reached down to her stomach. The blood seeped through her shirt and then through her fingers.

He grabbed her as she crumpled to the ground. He heard someone screaming and realized it was him. He was screaming at Maggie not to close her eyes. He realized that the look on her face was one of shock. When he reflected on it later, at her funeral, he realized she was seeing her life flash before her eyes.

Stay tuned…it is so, not over 😉
